Birtukan Deme MC/MPA 2014
Birtukan Midekssa Deme practiced law and eventually became a judge for the federal judiciary of Ethiopia. After leading roles with political groups seeking to challenge the ruling party, Deme went on to found Unity for Democracy and Justice, a political party committed to bringing about change through peaceful means. She was twice arrested for her work as an opposition leader but was able to gain her release and emigrate to the United States. She has received the Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellowship of the U.S. National Endowment for Democracy. She was a Harvard Scholars at Risk fellow at W.E.B. Du Bois Research Institute in academic year 2012-2013 and is currently a student at Harvard Kennedy School.
